Murdoch’s moves well-aligned with news trend toward the personal 4/3/07

Individuals are most interested in news that affects them directly, so increasingly, news will be about us. News was more about our own lives more than 500 years ago, before the arrival of the printing press. Back then, we were all participants in news, receiving and transmitting information about our lives and experiences by word-of-mouth. But the printing press forced us to be seated as spectators in a news audience, and read about the lives of others whom we did not know. The recent moves of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation are consistent with the moves of news back toward us. Its acquisition of MySpace added a service that is all about sharing very personal news, particularly of friends and family. And by dropping DirecTV, it shed a property that cannot survive convergence of all forms of the media we need for personal communication — satellites do not allow real-time voice communications without awkward, distance-generated time gaps.
